Q: We have 208 volt single phase wiring in our shop -- the result of splitting 3-phase wiring. Will the 230 v. 5hp Quincy motors run properly on this voltage? Are the motors provided by Quincy single wound or double wound? by Marvin Fretwell from Arizona on February 05, 2013
A: This compressor must have 230V single phase power. Running it on 208V will cause the motor to burn up/fail prematurely. A buck boost transformer can be installed by your electrician to convert 208V to 230V power. by Steve, Product Expert
Q: Having read the reviews of both the Quincy and IR units I am preparing to purchase the Quincy. Looking at accessories I see the IR unit has a 1/2" installation kit, would that be a good addition to the Quincy unit as well. Also, what all is provided with the unit to get it up and running on arrival. Thanks. by Terry Martinson from Iowa on October 31, 2011
A: Since this is a 230V unit your electrician will need to wire it into your power system.
It comes with a 2 year factory warranty, but if you register the unit with Quincy and use their Maintenance Kit every year you can extend your factory warranty to 5 years!
You may want to consider an air distribution system to make the most of your new compressor. The MaxLine system is meant for larger compressors and buildings; here is the link to take a look: RapidAir MaxLine Air System. by Steve, Product Expert

It was a tough choice to slot Better and Best. Quincy has been around a while, too- since 1924. With that much practice, like our Better pick, you can get really good at building a quality product.
They both have high efficiency parts, are built for continuous duty, industrial use, and are ASME certified. And, both are built in the US of A.
What bumped Quincy into the top spot was the 50,000 hour- or more- pump life rating. You will spend more money up front, but in the long run (some Quincy air compressors are still running after 25 years!) it will be money well spent.

Shop Is Finally Coming Together
After what seemed to be a lengthy"Order Processing" period (not really that long, but patience is not one of my virtues), the unit was shipped and arrived a day earlier than expected. UPS treated it well, and the liftgate delivery went without a hitch.
Getting it off the pallet was a challenge. I weigh 150 soaking wet and constipated..... so I tried contacting "Rent-a-Gorilla",
but it seems they are out of business. At the time I received the compressor, I was also having a complete solar power
installation going on, so the installers helped.
I had a 100 amp subpanel installed as part of the solar thing - one outlet for the compressor, one for a welder as well. Everything went just peachy, and the pics show the final assembly. The compressor ran a little faster than I expected - and a little noisier than I hoped - but nowhere near the noise level of my old oilless roll-around.
It fired up beautifully, and I expect I'll be a happy camper in the shop for quite a while now. :-)
ACD RESPONDS: We are so sorry your pictures didn't upload; they may have been too large. We need them to be as close to 338x338 as possible.

Read all the reviews then ordered this compressor on a Tuesday. I was waiting for confirmation that it shipped and it was delivered that Friday!
I had it delivered to work and took it home in my pick-up, then used a front end loader to get it off the truck. It's a beautiful compressor, excellent fit and finish no issues wiring. The pressure switch box SQ-D is a bit small but no big problem.
The instructions could be clearer for wiring (note 8 gauge wire 40 amp breaker ) Runs quiet. Still running lines for my shop.
MADE IN THE USA - superior quality - for very few bucks more - keep an American employed and the money in this country well!

Can't Beat The Performance
I wanted a more powerful compressor that would fill fast, have enough PSI pressure to run a 3/4 impact, be reasonably quiet, and recover quick enough so I didn't have to stand there and wait for it to catch up.
My new Quincy definitely fit the bill. It'll fill from 0 to 175psi in less than seven minutes, runs very quiet for its size and actually refilled to capacity while using an angle grinder to clean off gasket material.
The power cord/switch box is a little tight but I made it work. Re-torquing the cylinder heads was easy once I removed the air crossover tube, no big deal.
Anybody working in his or her garage needs this compressor, you won't be disappointed, for the price you can't beat the performance.
ACD RESPONDS: Please remember that changes to the unit may affect your Factory Warranty. If you have questions, you can contact Quincy directly at (217) 277-0270.

My brother works at quarry, he uses a similar Quincy compressor every day that he reckons was made circa 1961. Hopefully mine will last half as long.
My other brother worked for Baldor- he says motor is top shelf.
I would agree with the other reviews that the box that houses the contactor / pressure controlled AC relay is way too small.
It was very difficult to get 12 gauge wires in when I should have used 10 gauge but there was no making them fit.
The wiring diagram instructions did not include the contactor that shipped with mine. I'm an electrical engineer so I figured it out with an ohm meter rather easily but one should not need to be an experienced technician to wire up a compressor.
Seems to me there should be a picture with "put one phase here and the other phase here and ground there" type of instructions instead of the nonsense that was included.
I wish there was a flange of some type near the outlet so I could secure my stand pipe (for lack of a better term) for my regulator.
Look at the picture of the pipe coming from the tank to my regulator; it is just floating so if you grab/pull/push it it will twist. I wish there were something to secure it to. I could weld a plate to the side of the tank but I can't stand to dork out the paint.

Go Big Or Go Home
I haven't had the chance to use my sandblaster with it yet, which is the reason why I got it. But I will never have the worry of running out of air.
Shipping was a breeze. Setup was very easy. People complain of the wiring box being too small- it's a tight fit but it wasn't hard at all. I wired 10 gauge Romex line to a 30 amp breaker, and it purrs like a kitten.
It almost didn't fit in the garage. It's a beast of a machine for a homeowner like me. Go Big Or Go Home.

Great Compressor! (except The Switch)
I would highly recomend to anybody looking to buy a new compressor to seriously consider a Quincy!
Everything about this compressor is quality, except the piece of junk Square-D pressure switch that has virtually no room in it for wiring.
If the cover isn't on box just right it throws off the pressure with which it turns on and shuts off at. I actually had it blow off the safety valve twice because the cover was slightly distorted with wiring and it was touching the mechanism that actuates on and off.
Other than that this is a serious duty compressor that I have yet to run out of air while blasting! Well built, and made in the USA!

My New Compressor
I am very happy! It is much quieter than I expected.
The instruction manual states that vertical units should not be mounted on isolation pads. My only complaint is the unit vibrates the concrete floor of my shop, and I'm wondering it shouldn't be on isolation pads. I installed the unit as directed, with the anchor nuts loose from the feet, double-nutted, but not tight on the feet.
Other than that I am very satisfied.

More Compressor Than The Home Handyman Will Ever Need...
After many years spent wishing for a heavy duty compressor, I finally bought a Quincy. I had always thought I'd purchase an IR compressor, but after comparing specs and reviews, I decided the Quincy was a better compressor.
Quincy calls this an "economy" model, but make no mistake - this thing is built to last. Everything about it is quality, from the American made Baldor motor to the 4 cylinder, two-stage compressor. It is well assembled and beautifully finished.
Once I wired it up, I flipped the breaker and was delighted at how quiet and well balanced the unit was - Quincy recommends attaching it to the floor, but I had not yet done this and was expecting it to vibrate and dance (it didn't).
The only negative comment I would offer is that the pressure switch (manufactured by Square-D) housing is too small for the wiring it needs to contain. This compressor needs a 30 Amp, 10 gauge supply circuit, and there isn't enough room inside the box to connect and route the input wires (10 gauge solid copper is rather stiff, and doesn't easily bend in a tight radius). I had a great deal of difficulty forcing the wires to fit.
Since installing it, I have tried every air tool I own, and it can keep up with anything I throw its way - even running multiple tools simultaneously, which is something that I rarely have to deal with in my small shop.
If you run a commercial shop with multiple users, you may want to consider one of the bigger compressors as your primary unit. But for a small scale, single worker shop, this unit is more than big enough for the job. And at the end of the day, you can sit back and admire the pretty blue paint job!

Keeps Up To My Sander
The start up / break in instructions were a little foggy. I would like to see better instructions for the less than novice, after all the initial break-in of any machinery is key to its long life. The wiring instructions are spot on.
I like that this compressor is relatively quiet. It keeps up to my Ingersoll Rand DA sander, which is the reason for my purchase. I am very happy with this purchase. I have recommended this compressor from PED to a few of my friends.
I added an hour meter to my compressor. I think this will be a very nice option to have as now I know exactly when to change oil without guessing. The meter was picked up pretty cheap and installed near the motor for easy reading.

Much Quieter
I am really impressed with this compressor. I had been using a small 30 gallon, so-called 5HP Craftsman for 8 years. It was good for running a nail gun or occasional impact gun use. But, for my sandblaster and angle die grinder, it just couldn't handle the job. It was running itself to death just to get a few seconds of blasting only to wait forever to catch back up.
The new Quincy is a whole new level of compressor. It takes no time to build up to 175 PSI. Even running the sandblaster, the pressure NEVER dropped below 100 PSI. It is MUCH quieter than the old oil-less compressor.
I ran 3/4" hydraulic hose from the compressor to the 1/2" black iron pipe on the wall. I then ran the black iron with 2 drop legs, then to a 1/2" regulator, then a 1/2" coalescing filter= Perfectly dry air.
Smooth transaction and quick shipping. Will definitely recommend this compressor and Air Compressors Direct to anyone! If my pictures do upload, don't critique how dirty my shop is!!! LOL!

Quincy Is The Best Air Compressor I Have Owned!
I ordered my Quincy 2V41C60VC in November 2012 and have had it a little over one year. This air compressor is fantastic for my home two car garage.
It's runs quieter than any other air compressor I have ever owned to this day, and with a lightning fast recovery- I will keep this one forever. It's primary use is for powering my DA, Jitterbug, Spray Gun, Air Ratchet, and Nitrocat 1200 Impact. It does this flawlessly.
I use it to work on everything from my riding lawnmower to my Custom 1934 Chevy Convertible Street Rod. This compressor takes everything I throw at it and comes back begging for more.
I was concerned what the 60 gallon tank would not be enough because of my limited space constraint, but I was wrong. Painting, sanding, big CFM air tool usage- I have never had to wait for a recovery. Check out my pictures and see what it has done for me.

Last A Lifetime
I went through the brands and specs. A tank is a tank. They all have to pass ASTM testing. The money is in the compressor and motor.
Baldor is the standard in electric motors and the Quincy pump is very well built. I bought the compressor and it arrived 1 week later. It was full of break-in oil, and the belt tension was spot on.
It took all of 20 minutes to wire it with an L1020 plug, McMaster Carr 7162K45. I already had a 220V receptacle wired, McMaster Carr 7162K43 . If you don't then you have to pull wire and mount the receptacle or call an electrician. The unit fired right up and ran very smooth and quiet compared to my oil-less compressor.
Quincy says to let the compressor run for an hour and monitor. This is difficult as the 60 gallon tank fills to 175psi in 5 minutes. So here's what you do: let the tank fill to 140psi then open both ball valves to maintain 140psi for the hour. If you're going to stand there, wear ear protection! I walked away and checked on it every 10 minutes.
Compressors are like engines in that the rings need to be under load to seal. If you have the valves open at the start there is no back pressure on the rings and they will take much longer to seat. After 1 hour I closed the valves and let it fill to the shut-off 175 psi. The unit gets very hot and so does the tank.
I turned off the power and let it cool for 3 hours. I then opened the drain vavle and let the water out. This must be done every 2-3 days, especially if the compressor is in a place that has large temperature swings like a garage.
I also installed a filter/coalescing regulator, McMaster Carr 4910K023 and would highly recommend you do also. I also mounted vibration dampening feet, McMaster Carr 60855K54. I'm very pleased with the quality and operation of the unit.
If I had one wish it would be that there was an On/Off sign. This was taken care of by simply making a label.
This compressor will last a lifetime for sure.
ACD RESPONDS: To maintain your Factory Warranty, it's always best to follow the manufacturer's break-in procedure exactly as described in your Owner's Manual.

Well Built
I just got it delivered last week. It came on time, was well crated, and the shipper backed the truck right next to my shop and liftgate/pallet jacked it right in.
It really looks like an HD piece of equipment, and as soon as I borrow a pipe threader from a friend I'll be installing it.
I had not realized it was a four cylinder compressor unit or that everything would be so well built. I was hoping for the best and got it!
After years of not having enough air to sandblast without major waits for pressure to build back up this is going to be great!

Plain And Simple
I ordered my Quincy compressor from Air Compressor's Direct and paid by check to save the 2%. I also paid for the lift gate service - the 2% I got back covered that.
The freight carrier called at 8am and was at my driveway at 1:30. The driver used his pallet jack and wheeled it about 150' into my shop. I had my neighbor and a relative help with uncrating - there was a full cage around the compressor and attached to the pallet - and unbolted it from the pallet.
The compressor itself, I'm guessing, is 100 pounds less than listed due to the pallet and crate. We marked the holes in the floor and put the Hilti to work and bolted it to the floor with some wedge anchors and also used some rubber isolation pads. The wiring was simple - I already had the rough-in done - so a few stak-ons and a wire nut and it was done.
The pressure switch is a little tight so I would recommend using stranded #10 thhn wire instead of solid - like in a piece of romex.
As for the compressor - WOW!! The 1st thing that caught my eye was the drain valve piped out to the front with a high end ball valve - no cheap petcock. Everything on this beauty says pure quality - Made in the USA.
The little I've used it already I can tell it's a huge upgrade from my old 25 gallon unit. I will be using this for car repair, painting and many more and I know this is more than adequate for what I need.
I doubted how this purchase would go, dealing with a trucking company and all the rest. This was one of the easiest purchases I have ever made in my life. I commend Air Compressor's Direct for their service and will be using the other factory direct companies listed under them for other purchases. Thanks!!

Quiet Smooth Compressor
Great compressor!! Quiet, smooth, and running.
I put it in the back corner of my shop, hardly notice it running compared to my old one.
The one and only complaint -- the cheap Square D pressure switch! How do they expect to terminate 10 gauge wire in that little box?
I'm an electrical engineer, and I would be ashamed to put that switch on my product. A better switch does not cost that much more.

Frickin' Awesome!
I could not be happier! I really have zero complaints. If I had to complain about anything it would be that it makes all the other stuff in my shop look old!
I just happened to have to go to chain store the other day and thought that I would compare my Quincy to their "made in USA" model. What a joke! If I were blindfolded, I could tell the difference!
I noticed that some folks were complaining about the size of the pressure switch as far as hooking up power goes; I really don't see an issue. The control is standard size and is a quality Square D unit.
Thanks for a great unit, guys!

Following approximately 1 year of research and procrastination, I made the decision to go with Air Compressors Direct and Quincy.
In the end my decision was between IR and Quincy and based on various reviews from multiple sites I felt Quincy was the best overall value. I was very surprised to see the compressor arrive at my house in less than one week! Quincy had the unit crated well and so the compressor arrived bright and shiny and without a scratch.
While I did pay for lift gate service, there was no way the 28' articulated trailer was going to get up my long, winding driveway. The driver lowered the unit on the side of the road in front of my house and I used my tractor to pick up the pallet and carry the unit up the driveway to my garage.
I had my electrician wire the unit (I had a box with the power I needed ready on the wall adjacent to where I located the compressor). It took my electrician about 30 minutes to wire the unit up. He did comment that the box was pretty tight and made it a bit of a challenge to get the wires connected and box closed. Quincy really should go one size larger on the box as this shortcoming and the interference the inter-cooler line creates with 2 of the head bolts (as others have mentioned) are the only shortcomings with this great piece of equipment.
The unit is as loud as you would expect a 2 stage 5HP unit to be (a good deal louder than the very old, little, 3/4 HP. single lung 30 gallon horizontal I have been used to in my 3 car garage)... That being said, the dB level is acceptable.
Overall this compressor oozes American quality all over, from the best in class Baldor motor to the high quality pump. So far this is easily the best compressor I have ever had. I am very satisfied so far and this will hopefully not change as I put some hours on the unit.
This should last long enough to keep my son from having to buy a compressor many years down the road.

Great With One Exception
Great unit with one exception. The on/off switch would not shut off. It finally worked after "exercising" it 20 times. The cover over it is also kind of cheap and does not fit well.

Great So Far
I did a lot of research before deciding on the Quincy. I have been doing paint and body work for 20 + years, so i wanted something for home use that was as capable as what we have in the car dealership I work in.
I could tell immediately this was a quality machine. It just sounds like a serious compressor. I used a sander and primered a few panels on a full size truck and it barely ran.
I will update my review after more use, but I'm very happy so far.

Excellent Value & Craftsmanship But Unpacking Is Entertaining
Just fired this up today and I'm very happy with the air output. I can now use my blasting cabinet and blow up all the basketballs in Central New Jersey. I'm particularly happy with the quality of the build. I also note a pressure relief valve on the intake to the high side pump. The unit is very quiet and reaches cut off quickly. I'll update this once I use it for bead blasting.
Maybe I didn't see it in the reviews but this thing is REALLY TOP HEAVY. The crating is fine but I noticed even when the driver put the crate on the lift gate, the crate was wobbling around an awful lot. He had to drop it RIGHT AWAY to stabilize it. It's tough to get my buddies up where I live so I was planning on moving this off the pallet myself. NOT a chance. OK, I may be a sissy but I was not going to break my brand new compressor...or show up in the ER with a air cleaner sticking out of my head.
So, I kept the compressor on the pallet, cut away the unnecessary wood, reinforced what was left and was able to put the compressor in exactly the spot I had planned.
Great compressor, just didn't know I'd have to use the Sawzall, a chain saw, a long crowbar and a BFH to install a compressor.
You learn something every day.
I'll be happy to post a picture but for anybody who would actually buy this compressor, it may be too obvious. Just cut away what's not needed. But happy to help.

Poor Quality And Horrible Service
Compressor pump failed in less than 1 month, I've been dealing with lousy customer Service from ACD and Quincy for over two weeks to try and get pump repaired, won't return my calls.
I will never purchase anything from neither Quincy or Air Comp Direct ever again.
ACD RESPONDS: The notes on your file show that you contacted us on 3/13/12 & asked to speak with our Product Expert. An hour later the same day our Product Expert spoke with you & let you know that a local Quincy service center was coming to your location a week later on 3/20/12 to evaluate the failure.
Our Product Expert also invited you to call us back after tomorrow's warranty service appointment if you felt there was any other assistance we could render within the terms of our service policies (found on the Returns page of our web site) and Quincy's warranty.
Quincy builds a quality product and has an excellent track record with their warranty service; we are sure they will take good care of you.

Overall I'm happy with the compressor, just not very happy with the wait time I had before it was delivered. I ordered on Dec. 23rd and the compressor was finally delivered on Jan. 27th. When it was originally ordered I was told it was about 7-10 days before delivery which was acceptable. Over a month is not acceptable in my opinion as I had to eat down time while I waited for it to show up.
It was delivered by a very professional company and brought right into my shop where it needed to go. It was crated very nice and took a good bit of work to get it unloaded off the pallet. No shipping damage and works great.
ACD RESPONDS: We are sorry for the inconvenience! We post delivery times according to what the manufacturers tell us. We update our website, and let our customers know regularly by email, about any delays as we find out about them.

After having a Quincy at the shop, i decided i needed one for my home as well. This compressor may be called the Economy Series but it is by far the best bang for your money.
The motor is a solid Baldor unit and the pump is a cast iron 4 cylinder. The tank could be bigger but that really isn't a deterring factor. I have mine run in series to another 35 gallon tank and the pump doesn't kick on as much.
The noise level is bearable and the duty cycle isn't nuts. The pump compresses the air extremely fast and the cfm supports the use of 3 air grinders at once. Also the famous Quincy blue paint is beautiful.
On the downside, the pressure switch isn't as solid as i would like and as others have said, it is very tight. I also have a slight air leak in a few of the fittings on the pump. Other then that, this compressor is as solid as they get.

Glad I Chose The Quincy
Before I purchased my Quincy Air Compressor I read all the reviews and did a lot of internet research as to which Air Compressor would BEST SUIT my needs. Glad I chose the Quincy 2V41C60VC.
I will have to agree with a few comments that other included in their review concerning the pressure switch box for the power splice box. Gets a little tight to say the least.
Also retorgueing the compressor heads bolts after the 100 hour break-in period is going to be interesting because or the positioning of the coolant lines.
I can live with these small design faults and look forward to many years of service from my Quincy.

Quincy Is Quality
I purchased this unit about 4 months ago. It was delivered in a couple of weeks and set up was easy. I did not receive a maintenance kit that I ordered with it. However, I called and one was sent out immediately.
The service was very good and the Quincy definitely meets my expectations. I am a gunsmith and use the compressor quite often doing sand blasting.
I highly recommend this unit to anyone needing a medium duty shop compressor. Don't let the Economy Line mislead you. It might be Quincy's Economy Line but it would be the top of the line from many of the other suppliers.

Great Compressor
I received this compressor a couple weeks ago - delivered in perfect condition - Air Compressors Direct was great to deal with - no hassle - and no issues.
The compressor runs smooth, fairly quiet, and no vibration. I believe it really will last a lifetime for me.
Some comments I have that I intend to forward on to Quincy....
1) The wiring hookup should be simpler - should be just like hooking up an electric dryer. Instead of just buying a dryer cord to hook it up and making 3 terminal connections, you have to use a wire nut on one connection and the electric switch box is so small it makes a 5 minute task into a 30 min task.
2) Quincy recommends that after a one hour initial run, that you re-torque the head bolts. That would be a simple task except for the fact that they run the inter-cooler line right over the top of the 4 rear head bolts - not a good design there - makes 2 of those 4 rear bolts almost impossible to re-torque. Somebody was not thinking.
3) The specs for this compressor say it has a three-quarter in air outlet - not true - it is a one half in. So if you have a three-quarter in connection waiting to hook it up to - surprise - you will have to fit in a reducer.
One last comment - this may be true of other brands also - Quincy recommends a 100 hour - no load break-in to seat the rings. So don't plan to use it immediately if you want to follow the procedure.
ACD RESPONDS: Thank you for letting us know about the air outlet size- we have corrected the website to reflect a 1/2" NPT outlet.

Some Disappointment
I was a little disappointed to see that when the compressor arrived the factory manual was labelled in large letters that this is their economy version.
Air Compressors Direct recommended it and said you pay a littler more now but worth it in the long run. Just felt a little weird but hoping the compressor lives up to their name.
ACD RESPONDS: Rest assured, your air compressor is built in the USA to last. Quincy has a complete line of air compressors up to and including huge industrial units. They put the same care and attention into the smallest unit as they do their largest.
We believe that Quincy's economy line is equal or better than many manufacturer's top of the line units, proven by their track record since 1920.
If you have any questions, please feel free to give the folks at Quincy a call at (217) 277-0270.
