Porter Cable C2002 Reviews & Ratings
3 Years For Frustration With An Inferior Product
By Jon L.

Review Posted 11/02/2018
Bought this unit at Lowes and I only use it 3 times a year. I liked the specifications, but it loses pressure constantly and restarts every 10 minutes. Do not buy this compressor, it’s a waste of money.

Bought this about 3 months ago. First unit I bought had a minute crack on the weld on the tank drain plug so it would not hold pressure. Returned it and the replacement still does not hold pressure, even thought I can't find any leaks.
Cycles on every 15 - 20 minutes if left on. Pressure regulator knob and spring also falls out if loosened to relieve pressure. Conclusion: very poor quality control and materials on this unit.

Disappointing

I purchased the Porter Cable compressor 3 Pack about two years ago to help me with my wood working projects. The nailers have all been fine and so far have not given me any trouble. The compressor on the other hand is poor quality. The pressure regulator uses cheap plastic parts and poor seals.
I now have a bad air leak from the regulator caused by a bad seal. The seal is not available as a standalone product. I have found a rebuild kit that includes a new seal but it costs $22.00 and includes parts I do not need. A new seal if available would cost no more than a buck.
I'm very disappointed in the quality of the compressor having had it just over two years. I expected a lot more wear and tear out of a Porter Cable product. Porter Cable needs to get their act together and fix this common problem once and for all.

Plastic regulator parts
By Mike

Review Posted 06/01/2015
My compressor is about 2-1/2 years old and sees only occasional use for tire inflation and a pneumatic air hammer for removing wheel lug nuts. The plastic spring seat in the regulator valve within the manifold has sheared. The part is not available and you must order a complete manifold for repair. The new manifold uses the same plastic part under a very heavy duty spring. The manifold costs more than half the price of a new compressor and will likely fail again.

I have the model 2002. Worked great for quite some time until that cheap plastic piece inside the regulator blew apart! One has to buy the whole assembly to the tune of $52 and change. Shame on Porter Cable Co.!

Wastes Air (money) Randomly
By John

When the compressor pump shuts off, often there is a hissing sound (air leaking), as if the pump’s exhaust valve stuck open, thus air from the tank leaks back through pump. So if the pump shuts-off mid-cycle on the discharge stroke (open valve), it will self-bleed down the tank - aka waste air.
It’s like roulette every time the compressor shuts off whether it’s going to leak back or not. When it does, I’ve “saved” my tank air by attempting to restart the pump (on/off) to get the pump to move enough to complete its last cycle, thus property seat the exhaust valve. Especially frustrating when the pump is on auto and this happens when the tank just got fully charged ... since the auto-off safety will not allow the pump to comeback on, thus you have to simply listen to your money (electricity) go to waste until the tank gets low enough to reactivate the pump.

Thought Porter Cable would be reliable

Came to this site to find a good reliable compressor... I have had my Porter Cable for a few years now and it has never really been working to its potential. It has had a small leak almost from the beginning.
I don't use it too much, usually for nailing and the leak has gotten worse over the years. I finally took it apart to find out just where it was and still could not find it. I have had it with this model and hope I can find a decent small compressor online.
I would not recommend this model.

This unit comes with a 1 year Factory Warranty that covers defects in materials or workmanship.
A simple toll-free call to the folks at Porter Cable at 888-848-5175 during the warranty period would have resolved the problem with either repair or replacement, and saved you some aggravation over the years.
There are excellent small air compressors available if you can take a small step up in power and price. In the hand-carry category you might want to look at sturdy, dependable units like the Puma LA5721 or the Rolair FC1500HBP2.

$2 plastic knob not replaceable
By Ron B.

Review Posted 10/07/2013
I have a 4 year old C2002 "pancake" compressor that I use 5-6 times/year with a nailer.
The plastic knob on the front of the manifold is threaded and is used to control the pressure delivered to the tool. The threads are stripped now and it should be an easy fix to unscrew the knob and replace it.
However, the knob is not available by itself. I am required to purchase a new manifold assembly (which represents nearly half the cost of the compressor). Not a happy camper.

Having to buy the whole assembly is frustrating, but very common- you'd think it would be a simple matter to just drop the knob in the mail, but the days of extra pieces and parts are fast disappearing.
If you Google "fix a plastic knob" you will find several different ways to renew the threads, some more durable than others.
You might also want to cruise your local home improvement store or flea market with the knob in hand to see if something can be re-purposed to do the job.
