Product Q&A

Three questions: 1. Is the Quincy Q12120PQ compressor a reasonable choice for painting with a HVLP-HTE spray gun? Here are the specs for my gun: Air pressure 2 Bar (29 PSI), Air cap pressure (10 PSI), Air inlet 1/4 NPS (PS), Fluid inlet M 16x1.5P, Air consumption 6 CFM (283L/min). Are there other compressors you would recommend over this one?I need a portable compressor that will run off 115V current. Could potentially use a gas-powered compressor, but would prefer to use electric. 2. Should I put a filter between the compressor and the gun? If so, what would you recommend? 3. Any tips or recommendations regarding setup? Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Answer
An air tool requires air flow to work.

Think of a windmill. A slight breeze lacks the power to turn the blades. However, a hurricane-force wind can generate substantial power.

Some air tools consume more air than others. Nailers and staplers require a puff of air. Sandblasters and sanders need massive gusts.

So, you basically want to know how fast the air comes out of the compressor. The air flow is measured in Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM). The greater the flow -- the greater the power.

You simply select an air compressor that exceeds the CFM of your most powerful air tool. If the flow isnt strong enough, the air tool simply wont perform properly.
We recommend sizing the compressor 1.25-1.5 times the CFM of your tool for continuous operation. If the compressor does not produce enough air volume, CFM, then the pressure will drop.
Reciprocating (Piston) compressors are not designed for continuous or 100% duty cycle. The compressor will cycle off & on if it is sized correctly.
The air line filters we sell are sized by the air delivery, CFM, of the compressor & by the amount of filtration required. The general purpose filters remove contaminants down to 1 micron in size. If additional filtration is needed, then adding a high efficiency filter behind the general purpose filter will remove contaminants to 0.01 micron in size. Here's the link to those filters:

In general, we recommend placing air line filters & water separators as far from the compressor as possible. This allows the water vapor to cool & form droplets that are more easily filtered out of the compressed air.
